Continuous measurements of the burial depth of a power cable
Based on fiber optic technology, we are developing software for detecting the burial depth status of a power cable.
The technique is based on tests for lake conditions (bathymetry project VMM), but could be applied for submarine power cables.
Because optical fibres are now intrinsic to submarine power cables, we can remotely verify whether the cable is buried to a sufficient depth.
This monitoring can be done continuously over the project life time and serve as an early warning system for uncovered cables.
Trend analysis of the burial depth evolution provides knowledge for the identification, planning and prioritization of actions to ensure sufficient burial depth.
