Distributed monitoring of loads in water with fiber optic systems
With the support of IWT, Fluves developed a fiber optic load cell to measure continuously load changes in many locations simultaneously in water.
The load cell has been tested for different conditions in the the Flanders Hydraulics Laboratory. The test results show a very high accuracy in tough submerged environments.
The hydrostatically compensated load cell is designed for operation underwater. Applications include morphological monitoring, marine weighing, submerged platforms and industrial weighing applications where flooding is possible. The stainless steel construction and rugged design make the load cell a high accuracy and reliable device for continuous load monitoring under water.
Fiber optic technology offers several advantages over electronics, such as the ease of combining different sensors on one cable, no electro-magnetic interference and no loss or drift of the signal.
