The G-Time research group at Université Libre de Bruxelles needed a sophisticated fiber optic sensing solution for their large-scale geophysics research, aiming to study hydro-volcanic processes with detailed acoustic measurements.
- Challenge: The G-Time research group needed a fiber optic sensing solution for large-scale geophysics research to study hydro-volcanic processes with detailed acoustic measurements.
- Solution: Fluves provided the High-Fidelity Distributed Acoustic Sensor (HDAS) system with advanced chirped optical pulse technology and data processing algorithms for superior performance and stability.
- Results: The HDAS system was successfully deployed in Iceland, Italy, and Belgium, aiding research on underwater volcano degassing, glacial dynamics, and geothermal energy, and was transportable in a robust, shock-damped case.
Challenge
The G-Time research group sought a distributed fiber optic sensing solution to conduct detailed acoustic measurements for investigating hydro-volcanic processes on a large scale.
Solution
Fluves has offeredtheir High-Fidelity Distributed Acoustic Sensor (HDAS) system, supplied by Aragon Photonics, in combination with Fluves data processing algorithms. This HDAS works with a unique chirped optical pulse method, providing the HDAS with best-in-class performance in terms of linearity, quantitativeness and a stable signal-to-noise ration, with no fading points. The device consists of a sensing (= optical) unit and a processing unit.
Result
Since receiving the HDAS system, the G-Time research group has successfully deployed the HDAS in Iceland, Italy and Belgium (among others) as part of their ongoing research, which focuses on the following topics:
- Monitoring underwater volcano degassing
- Glacial dynamics
- Geothermal energy
The HDAS was built into a robust, shock-damped transportation case, allowing for safe transport and installation in remote locations.
