Challenge
A large multinational chemical group aimed to detect corrosion under insulation in a complex pipeline system spanning nearly 1000 meters.
Solution
Fluves Corrosion detects potential corrosion spots along an insulated pipeline. The system continuously monitors moisture in the insulated pipelines & vessels which lead to corrosion. The system is based on fiber optic sensing along every meter of infrastructure, without having to remove the insulation or cladding protection. The measurement system has been installed at various petrochemical sites in Antwerp, where corrosion was detected that was not detected with standard inspection techniques.
Results
Fluves Corrosion identified more than 10 corrosion spots along the pipeline. Remarkable: On some spots with high risk at corrosion there were no visible holes, dents, or other abnormalities on the outside cladding.
Validation
The company inspection team uncovered and inspected all locations that were identified by Fluves Corrosion system in detail. Fluves successfully identified all the areas that the team had marked as corrosion risk points using RBI techniques, and additionally highlighted other critical points. Additionally, Fluves reduced false positives by 75%, significantly lowering redundant inspection costs. Finally, the spatial coverage (one meter accuracy) as forecasted by Fluves’ system matched 100% with the reality, so the locations were pinpointed very accurately.
